Year 1 and 2
Welcome to Class McGough
Here is our Autumn Class Newsletter – Class Newsletter Autumn 2020
Welcome back to what feels like such a long time away from our classrooms!
In our class we have our teacher Miss McGough and our wonderful teaching assistant Mrs McGuinness.
We have 30 children in our class!
This term in…
In English we will begin our term by looking at The Worrysaurus by Rachel Bright. We will explore emotions and that feeling of being worried. There will be a big focus on well-being throughout the first few weeks of Year 1 and 2. We will then move onto The Night Box and stories about Aliens! Finally, we will end Autumn looking at stories about bears, particularly Miss. McGough’s favourite- The Bear and the Piano. There will be a strong focus on phonics for both Year 1 and 2 trying to work towards our Phonics Screening test so any extra phonics activities done at home would be greatly appreciated.
In Maths we will be focusing on Place Value, Addition and Subtraction and Multiplication and Division. We are enjoying practicing our Fluent in Five in Year 2 to increase our speed with mental maths. It is our aim to become more proficient / fluent at applying our maths skills in problem solving and mathematical reasoning.
In Science we will be covering Living things and their habitats and The Environment this term.
In Geography and History we will be exploring Our Local Area and ‘What can I find in my corner of the world?’. We will be practicing our map skills and our knowledge of location. We will also be looking at how transport has changed over time with a local focus upon George Stephenson and Timothy Hackworth. We will be working on our skills of chronology and recognising similarities and differences.
In Art and Design we will be focusing upon Landscapes. We will be learning how to use our sketchbooks too.
Reading – Each child has an individual reading book and reading record. Reading of any type is very important as we only become good writers if we are good readers! – Please encourage regular reading. We have just introduced a new reading process into school ‘Accelerated Reader’. Children are given a book at their reading level. When complete, children complete a quiz about the book. This will encourage children to read for understanding. Only some of our Year 2 children are accessing this program.
- P.E will take place on a Thursday. Please ensure that children are wearing appropriate P.E kit to school as we will be outdoors.
- Toast or a snack will be available each morning before first break. If you would like your child to receive this the cost will be £1.00 a week.
- Any letters which need to be returned can be placed in your child’s book bag and we will encourage children to check them before registration.
- Spelling will be given out on a Monday and practiced thoroughly within class time as well as sending them home! Our test is on the following Monday.
