Consultation with Children and Young People with SEND
Teachers/SENCO and Support Staff will work with children and young people to identify the support needed to meet agreed outcomes. The provision is planned and interventions are allocated to individual needs. The children take an active role with setting their outcomes and discussing them with the class teacher/SENCO. The children have regular meetings with staff to discuss their progress and support.
Consultation with parents and carers of children and young people with SEND
We are committed to working with parents and carers to identify their child’s needs and support. Parents and carers will be involved throughout the process.
There is a range of ways this can be done, for example:
- Termly parents/ carers evenings;
- Ongoing discussions with a class teacher and/or SENCO;
- An ‘open-door’ policy, where parents and carers are welcome to come into school to discuss any concerns they may have;
- Through regular reviews of their child’s SEN Support Plan/ EHC Plan.
How do we consult with our SEN pupils
Teachers meet with all children with SEN each term to gain their perspective, hopes for the future and aspirations. This is used to inform future planning and is included on their support plan.
We offer an open door policy where you are welcome any time to make an appointment to meet with either the class teacher or SENCO and discuss how your child is getting on. We offer advice and practical ways that you can help your child at home. We provide regular homework to support and complement the work carried out in school.
We believe that your child’s education should be a partnership between parents and teachers, therefore we aim to keep communication channels open and communicate regularly, especially if your child has complex needs. Sometimes, we operate a home / school link book which your child will bring home regularly so that comments from parents and teacher can be shared and responded to when needed, this ensures that we can also work together and there is a constant line of communication.
If your child is on the SEN register they will have SEN support plan which will have individual outcomes. This is reviewed termly and parents are invited into school to go through this plan and discuss proposed outcomes. We also encourage the child to attend this meeting where appropriate. We ensure the outcomes on the SEN support plan are SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time scaled) with the expectation that the child will achieve the outcome by the time it is reviewed. If your child has more complex SEND they may have an Education Health Care Plan, which means that a formal meeting will take place to discuss your child’s progress and reports are regularly written.
How will my child be able to contribute their views?
We value and celebrate each child being able to express their views on all aspects of school life. This is usually carried out through the School Council which has an open forum for any issues or viewpoints to be raised. Our school has been recognised as listening to the views of children by being awarded the Investors in Children Award.
Children who have Support Plans discuss their outcomes with the SENCO/ class teacher as mentionned above. There is an annual pupil questionnaire where we actively seek the viewpoints of children especially concerning being able to speak to an adult if they have a worry.
If your child has an EHCP (Education Health & Care Plan) their views will be sought before any review meetings. We also invite pupils to any annual review meeting.
The SENCO will work with all outside agencies that are involved in the welfare of your child.
How are parents involved with your school?
We are fully committed to encouraging parents to be involved with all aspects of school life. We welcome parents into school at the beginning and end of a school day in EYFS and they are welcome to arrange additional dates to meet with the teacher to discuss progress and provision. We invite parents to school performances, assemblies, Stay and Play activities, sports events, transition meetings and welcome meetings.
