Year 1 and 2
Welcome to Class McGough
We made it through that challenging Spring Term- here comes the final, most challenging and sunniest Summer Term!
In our class we have our teacher Miss McGough and our wonderful teaching assistant Mrs McGuinness.
We have 23 children in our class!
This is obviously an extremely important time for our Year 2 pupils as they will be taking their KS1 SATS during this term. Our Year 1 pupils will also be taking part in their Phonics Screening so lots of hard work will be taking place this term. Let’s keep up our brilliant, hard working attitudes!
This term in…
English we will begin our term by revising lots of different reading and GPS skills. Year 1 will continue our Superhero topic with Superbat. In Summer 2, we will be looking at inventors and designing our own inventions taking inspiration from Izzy Gizmo and Roald Dahl’s Incredible Inventions. To conclude our English we will be doing our Pirate topic – YES WE ARRRRRRGH! We will be looking at the books Sunk!, The Secret of Black Rock an Small Saul.
Maths we are looking at Position and Direction, Measurement- Height, Length, Weight, Capacity, Data Handling and Problem Solving. We are enjoying practicing our ‘Rock Star’ tables; trying to improve our speed with our times tables. It is our aim to become more proficient / fluent at applying our maths skills in problem solving and mathematical reasoning.
Science we will be covering animals and their habitats and safety this term.
In Geography and History we will be concentrating on Transport, including a trip to Locomotion at Shildon focusing on George Stephenson and Timothy Hackworth.
Spellings are given out on a Monday and are tested on the Friday – it is extremely important that children practise and learn these- this may change throughout Summer Term 1.
Reading – Each child has an individual reading book and reading record. Reading of any type is very important as we only become good writers if we are good readers! – Please encourage regular reading. We have just introduced a new reading process into school ‘Accelerated Reader’. Children are given a book at their reading level. When complete, children complete a quiz about the book. This will encourage children to read for understanding.
- P.E will take place on a Tuesday and Thursday. Please ensure that children have their P.E kits in school and that all items of clothing are labelled.
- Toast or a snack will be available each morning before first break. If you would like your child to receive this the cost will be £1.00 a week.
- Any letters which need to be returned can be placed in your child’s book bag and we will encourage children to check them before registration.
