Welcome to Class 5
Welcome to Year 4 and 5 where we love to learn
In our class we have our new teacher Mrs Davidson and our fabulous teaching assistant Mrs Brown!
Spring term revolves around firmly embedding the skills we have learned so far and developing our stamina and perseverance in all tasks that we take on.
English we are basing our writing on a class shared text ‘The Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes. Our exploration of this text has led to some lovely work on discussing how the author has crafted the story; drama activities and children choosing specific vocabulary for effect.
We are also working on some extended pieces of writing such as: First person recounts (diary entries in role as characters in the book); Persuasive letters – recommending the book; Letters in role as a character and Newspaper reports.
Maths we are consolidating our knowledge of the four operations and applying these calculation methods to ‘real life’ word problems. We are continuing our ‘Rock Star’ times-tables challenges, so we must practise our times tables at home in order to beat our own score every time.
Science we are working on ‘sound’ this term. We will explore how sounds are made when objects vibrate and how sound travels through solids, liquids & gases. We will investigate how well sound can travel through different materials and discover how instruments make sounds. We will explore how we can change the pitch & loudness.
History we are beginning our exciting new topic which explores the Ancient Kingdom of Benin. We will be finding out the difference between tribes and kingdoms and discover what the ancient kings were like.
DT we are taking a look at Global Food this term. We will look at where ingredients come from and explore traditional dishes from countries around the world.
Don’t forget that we are able to access Lexiacore5, RM easimaths and Activelearn maths at home. Get logging onto those laptops, iPads, etc.
Spellings are given out on a Monday and our test will be on the following Monday (one whole week to learn them!). The spelling rules and patterns are becoming much more complex so they must be practised even more often at home.
Children are encouraged to take reading books home and to read for a minimum of ten minutes every day. We have a dedicated ‘Guided reading’ session in class each day and whenever possible we have individual ‘one-to-one’ readers – but children do need much more. Working both at home and in school will help your child improve his/her reading skills immensely. Thanks in advance for all your support at home.
Water Bottles Remember to bring your water bottles to school. All the hard work makes us thirsty and we need to stay hydrated.
Toast We offer a morning snack of toast each day – for only £1.00 a week. Please send money in to Mrs Brown. Funds raised from this are used to buy extra resources for our class.
Finally, Mrs Davidson has an open-door policy – so if you have any questions or concerns please contact her to discuss them.
